The Challenge

St Catherine’s Hospice looks after around 2,000 people living with a terminal illness each year. Having been based at their previous home at Malthouse Road, Crawley, for over 40 years, St Catherine’s Hospice needed to move to a larger premises to meet increasing demand in West Sussex and East Surrey.

Thanks to funding from the local community, the Hospice were able to move into their new £19.5m building in Pease Pottage in 2023. The new facility houses 24 beds, an increase from 18 in their previous home, and all the rooms include a private garden and ensuite bathroom. Twelve of those rooms have adjoining sitting rooms for families to stay overnight, while four rooms have been designed especially to meet the needs of people with dementia.

In order to furnish this new facility, including the family lounges, ward corridors and reception coffee lounge, St Catherine’s required support for the delivery of a full interior design package. They wanted to implement a cohesive design that set an excellent standard for patient care, with the colour scheme, furniture and product specification working together to create a calm and comfortable care space.

Innova’s Solution

In collaboration with Interior Designer, Jane Verity-Smart, Innova were able to take on board St Catherine’s specific needs and create a design package that delivered their fitout brief. Through a series of consultations, we were able to share visuals and layouts, showcasing colour schemes and product specifications that would make an impact aesthetically, whilst also serving the functionality required for patients and staff.

Sustainability was also a key consideration, with the procurement process specifying furniture that was durable and long-lasting, enabling the Hospice to receive maximum value for their budget. To ensure a smooth delivery, Innova managed the storage and installation process of furniture and furnishings, enabling the Hospice fitout to run as planned.

As with any large fitout, there were changes to the original brief. With St Catherine’s Hospice, they had to increase the amount of materials they brought from their existing building to Pottage Pease. Using Innova’s ‘white glove service’, our installation team had the flexibility to look after this request. Deploying the Innova logistics team, the larger delivery of goods was easily accommodated to ensure they arrived at the same time as the new fittings and furnishings, without affecting the agreed budget.
