Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Changing Places

Opening in August 2022, Changing Places supplier, Innova Care Concepts, newly installed modular Changing Places toilet will help audiences with complex care needs to experience The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade more easily.

Taking place from 5 to 27 August, the Tattoo will make its long-awaited return, after a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with its show Voices.

Over 250,000 people in the UK require access to a Changing Places facility, as standard accessible toilets are unable to meet their care needs. By including a modular Changing Place, the Tattoo venue will cater for visitors with complex care needs who require carer support, appropriate equipment, and more space.

Derek Oliver (Innova) joined by Changing Places Campaigner, Jill Clark (Centre), to launch a new modular Changing Place for the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Changing Place supplier, Innova Care Concepts, supplied and installed the new facility, including specialist healthcare equipment such as an overhead hoist system, helping to eliminate the need to lift a person manually, reducing the strain on carers’ backs and the risk of injury to the person being transferred.

The new facility will be used every year for the festival, helping to make the annual event accessible for all.

Results from Muscular Dystrophy UK’s Changing Places survey in 2021 found that one in five Changing Places users, carers and potential users found it impossible to attend an outdoor event without a Changing Place toilet on site.
