The Challenge

St Christopher’s Hospice required a large-scale refurbishment across several inpatient ward floors to modernise facilities while continuing to deliver high-quality, compassionate end-of-life care. The challenge was to upgrade multiple wards with improved accessibility, safe patient handling solutions and specialist bariatric equipment, all while minimising disruption to patients, families and clinical teams.

Approach

Innova took on the project as a full ward refurbishment partner, with our  skilled and professional team of designers and subcontractors closely with the hospice team to carefully plan each phase of works. Our approach focused on sensitivity, clinical insight and clear communication, ensuring that upgrades were delivered safely, efficiently and in a way that respected the hospice’s calm, homely environment.

Implementation

Across several floors, Innova has delivered comprehensive ward refurbishments, including the supply and installation of ceiling mounted and bariatric hoists, along with specialist joinery items designed to meet complex patient needs. The works have been phased to allow the hospice to remain operational, with three wards successfully completed to date and further refurbishment works ongoing.

Results

The completed wards now offer safer, more accessible and more dignified environments for patients, alongside improved working conditions for staff. The introduction of hoisting and bariatric solutions has reduced manual handling risks and increased flexibility in care delivery. Once complete, the wider refurbishment programme will provide St Christopher’s Hospice with modern, future-ready wards that support comfort, safety and exceptional standards of care.

We now have all three refurbished wards open. This has been a huge effort with many people involved – not just in supporting the building work over the last year, but the thinking and planning behind it that happened over a period of time prior to then. I am very proud of what we have achieved as a team on the programme and what it will mean for patients and staff.

While we still have the fourth floor to do, I would like to take this chance to thank our prime contractors Innova who have helped us to reach this stage and who have worked in true partnership with us.
