The Challenge

In December 2025, Pens Meadow Special School in Dudley opened the doors to its new purpose-built premises, replacing the previous site with a bright, modern environment designed to support children and young people aged 3–19 with complex needs. The new facility needed to seamlessly integrate specialist equipment into a contemporary education environment without compromising aesthetics, safety or functionality. With a diverse pupil cohort and a wide range of mobility and care requirements, the school required robust, future-proofed moving and handling solutions alongside a high-quality hydrotherapy provision that could support therapeutic outcomes, independence and dignity across multiple spaces.

Approach

Working collaboratively with the wider project team, Innova developed a coordinated package that aligned with the school’s operational needs and layout. The focus was on delivering safe and efficient access solutions across classrooms, hygiene areas and therapy environments, while designing a hydrotherapy facility that would provide both therapeutic and sensory benefits. By planning early and integrating systems into the fabric of the building, Innova ensured a cohesive solution that supported staff workflows and long-term maintenance.

Implementation

Innova installed 20 ceiling track hoisting systems throughout the school, covering hygiene rooms, classrooms, the rebound room and the hydrotherapy suite to enable safe and dignified transfers. Within the hydrotherapy area, we delivered a stainless steel overflow hydrotherapy pool designed for durability, hygiene and enhanced user experience. To further support personal care, Innova supplied 11 shower trolleys, ensuring consistency in equipment and safety standards across the school.

Results

The result is a future-ready specialist education environment that enables staff to deliver exceptional care while giving pupils access to safe, inclusive and engaging spaces. The new school provides education for up to 155 pupils and includes 14 larger classrooms, dedicated therapy spaces, a rebound room, outdoor teaching and play areas, and a specialist hydrotherapy suite. With integrated hoisting, high-quality hygiene provision and a purpose-built hydrotherapy pool, Pens Meadow is equipped to support learning, therapy and wellbeing for years to come.
